Canada Revenue Agency Enhances Digital Services with New Identity Validation Option
Ottawa, Ontario – April 11, 2024
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has introduced a new identity validation option to streamline access to its digital services. This initiative aims to simplify the registration process for services such as My Account, My Business Account, and Represent a Client.
Key Highlights:
Document Verification Service: Users can now validate their identity using a government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s licence, for immediate access to their CRA accounts.
Immediate Access: The new option eliminates the need to wait for a CRA security code by mail, which previously took up to 10 business days.
Eligibility: To use this service, individuals must be 16 years or older and have a camera-enabled mobile device to photograph their ID.
Accepted IDs:
Canadian passport
Canadian driver’s licence
Provincial/Territorial ID card
Benefits:
Efficiency: Users can quickly update personal information, register for direct deposit, and check for uncashed cheques.
Self-Serve Options: The digital services allow users to manage their tax affairs online, reducing the need for phone calls and potential delays during tax season.
Security: The CRA assures that the new identity validation option is safe and secure, prioritizing the protection of personal information.
Quotes:
“The CRA’s digital services make it easy for users to view and manage their tax and benefit information from anywhere. We hope this new solution will encourage more people to register and more easily access the information they need to do their taxes and get the benefits they’re entitled to,” said The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of National Revenue.
Quick Facts:
Over 20.5 million Canadians already use the CRA’s digital services.
Tasks such as updating address, direct deposit information, or marital status are among the CRA’s top call drivers and can now be completed online.
With access to My Account, individuals can check the status of requests submitted to the CRA and apply for benefits like the interim Canada Dental Benefit.

Bookkeeping:
Maintaining Accurate Records and Books

Under the Income Tax Act Section 230 (1), it is crucial for every business and individual required to pay or collect taxes to maintain comprehensive records and books of account. This ensures that all taxes payable or collectible can be accurately determined. Also under Canada Business Corporations Act, you’re required to maintain records and books of account.
Key Requirements:
Location and Form: Records must be kept at the business or residence in Canada, or another location designated by the Minister. They should be in a form that allows for the determination of taxes payable or collectible.
Annual Inventory: An annual inventory must be maintained in the prescribed manner.
Qualified Donees:
Qualified donees, such as registered charities, must keep detailed records to:
Verify Donations: Maintain duplicates of donation receipts and other information to verify donations for tax deductions or credits.
Enable Ministerial Review: Ensure records are sufficient for the Minister to determine grounds for revocation of registration if necessary.
Special Provisions for Lawyers:
Lawyers must include all accounting records, supporting vouchers, and cheques in their records and books of account.
Ministerial Requirements:
If records are deemed inadequate, the Minister may specify the required records, which must then be maintained accordingly.
Retention Period:
Prescribed Period: Records must be kept for the period prescribed by law.
General Retention: All other records must be retained for six years from the end of the last taxation year they relate to.
Electronic Records:
Electronic records must be kept in a readable format for the same retention period.
Exemptions:
The Minister may grant exemptions from electronic record-keeping requirements under certain conditions.
By adhering to these guidelines, businesses and individuals can ensure compliance with tax regulations and facilitate accurate tax reporting.
