Free Tax Help Gets a Boost: What Renewed CVITP Funding Means for Canadians

Accessing tax benefits should not depend on income or expertise. For millions of Canadians with simple tax situations, free community tax clinics are often the difference between receiving benefits or missing out entirely. New federal funding aims to strengthen that safety net.

Funding Renewed for a Proven Program

In February 2026, the federal government confirmed a three-year renewal of funding for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The grant helps community organizations cover the real costs of running free tax clinics.

The announcement coincides with two milestones:

  • The CVITP’s 55th anniversary

  • Canada’s recognition of 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers

Why Most People Never Become Excellent and How to Break the Pattern

Excellence is not blocked by talent. It is blocked by avoidance. In Episode 791, Shaan Puri and Sam Parr unpack why most people never push past average and how disciplined discomfort separates top performers from everyone else.

The Core Pattern

Most people chase comfort, not progress. Irritation, not inspiration, is where real ideas begin.

  • Friction reveals opportunity

  • Discomfort signals growth

  • Ease keeps you small

The “Yes Test”

If an idea feels slightly scary but logically sound, it is usually worth chasing.

The Scale Paradox

The bigger the goal, the clearer the path.

Small Thinking

Big Thinking

Over-optimizes

Forces focus

Hides flaws

Exposes strengths

The Real Product

You are the product pushed outward. Branding follows behavior.

When “Creative Accounting” Becomes Criminal: A Quebec Tax Evasion Case Explained

Tax shortcuts often look harmless on paper. In reality, they carry serious legal and financial consequences. A recent Quebec court case shows exactly how quickly aggressive tax behaviour can cross the line and why Canadian families and business owners should pay attention.

The Case at a Glance

In February 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency confirmed convictions against three Quebec professionals tied to Cade Groupe Conseil inc. The case centered on false expense claims and fabricated documents submitted during a CRA audit.

The misconduct spanned multiple years and involved deliberate coordination between a company administrator, a consultant, and a CPA.

What Actually Happened

Between 2012 and 2014, the company claimed deductions that were not legitimate business expenses. The payments were, in substance, repayments of a personal loan.

When audited, false documents were created and submitted to support those claims.

This was not a bookkeeping error. It was intentional misrepresentation.

Who Was Involved and the Consequences

Penalty

Gaétan Desbiens

Administrator and shareholder

6-month conditional sentence and $74,450 fine

Claude Genest

Consultant

Jessy Savaria

Beyond these penalties, all taxes owed, plus interest and CRA penalties, remain payable.

CRA Auto-Filing: Should Canadians Be Skeptical?

In our latest TikTok video, Fraser explains why CRA auto-filing deserves a closer look. While it’s marketed as convenient, the real issue is accountability. When something goes wrong, the burden does not fall on the CRA. It falls entirely on you.

What Auto-Filing Actually Means

CRA auto-filing uses only the data it already has on record.

That means:

  • No review for missed credits

  • No search for deductions you didn’t report

  • No effort to lower your tax bill

@taxmechanic

The CRA wants to auto-file taxes for millions of Canadians. Sounds helpful… until you think about who pays when something goes wrong. This... See more

Where the Risk Sits

If CRA files your return incorrectly, they don’t feel the impact. You receive the letter, the deadline, and the stress.
