When a Side Hustle Loses Money
CRA scrutiny depends less on losses and more on proof of commercial intent.
Business losses do not automatically give the CRA grounds to deny deductions. The stronger test is whether the activity is genuinely commercial, not whether it is profitable right away.
That matters for side hustles, especially passion-adjacent ones like antique cars, collectibles, photography, or restoration work. Canadian courts have limited the CRAโs ability to reject losses simply because it doubts future profit. But where personal enjoyment is involved, taxpayers need objective proof that they are running a business, not subsidizing a hobby.
What CRA looks for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Separate banking | Shows business discipline |
Detailed records | Supports income and expenses |
Marketing activity | Proves revenue intent |
Time invested | Shows operational seriousness |
Profit-improvement steps | Demonstrates commercial purpose |
The practical takeaway: losses are defensible when the paper trail is strong. Weak records, personal use, vague receipts, and no clear plan to make money give the CRA room to challenge the claim.
If the business is real, operate like it from day one.

How Billionaires Teach Their Kids to Learn
One wealthy entrepreneur is betting $1 billion that motivation beats traditional education.
Billionaire software founder Joe Liemandt believes most schools optimize for compliance, not performance. His answer is Alpha School, an education model built around intensity, accountability, and self-directed learning.
Traditional School | Alpha School Model |
|---|---|
Seat time | Outcome-based progress |
Teacher-led pace | Self-directed learning |
Academic focus | Skills, fitness, leadership |
Compliance | Performance under pressure |
Students spend part of the day on academics using AI-powered tools, then shift to real-world skills such as entrepreneurship, public speaking, and leadership. The bet is that faster learning plus higher standards produces more capable students.
The broader lesson is blunt: in an AI world, knowledge alone is losing value. The edge goes to people who can learn, adapt, and execute faster.

Fear Is a Terrible Financial Advisor
The loudest headlines often tell the least complete story.
Financial anxiety is easy to sell. Stories about rising debt, mortgage stress, and housing uncertainty generate attention because fear creates urgency. The problem is that urgency can distort decision-making.
Several popular narratives circulating today lack historical context. Mortgage delinquencies, while rising, remain far below the levels seen in the early 1980s and 1990s. Interest rates feel elevated compared to the ultra-low pandemic era, but they are nowhere near the double-digit rates many Canadians experienced decades ago. Even foreclosure activity remains below previous economic cycle peaks.
Common Claim | Historical Reality |
|---|---|
Mortgage delinquencies are at record highs | Higher rates occurred in the 1980s and early 1990s |
Interest rates are unprecedented | Double-digit rates were common in past decades |
Canadians are losing homes at historic levels | Current levels remain below prior peaks |
This doesn't mean financial challenges aren't real. Many households are facing pressure from higher borrowing costs and rising living expenses. But good financial decisions require perspective, not panic.
When evaluating a mortgage, refinancing strategy, or debt solution, be cautious of advice built on urgency. Phrases like "buy now or never" or "last chance" are often designed to trigger emotion rather than improve outcomes.
The most effective financial decisions come from facts, context, and a clear understanding of your options.

CRA Delays GST on Mutual Fund Trailer Fees Until 2028
The extension buys time, but the compliance burden isnโt going away.
The CRA has pushed back its controversial plan to apply GST/HST to mutual fund trailing commissions, giving dealers and independent advisers until January 1, 2028 to comply. The move extends the original July 2026 deadline by 18 months after industry groups warned that firms lacked the systems needed to track, calculate, and remit the tax.
The policy marks a significant shift. Earlier this year, the CRA reversed its long-standing position and concluded that trailing commissions should be subject to GST/HST. While the implementation date has changed, the underlying tax treatment has not.
For wealth management firms, the extension provides breathing room to update operational processes, reporting systems, and adviser workflows. However, the transition period comes with a notable caveat.
Key Issue | Implication |
|---|---|
GST/HST delayed until Jan. 1, 2028 | More time for system and process changes |
Tax treatment unchanged | Firms must still prepare for eventual compliance |
Input tax credits claimed before 2028 | May trigger earlier GST/HST remittance obligations |
Advisers with GST numbers | Will be responsible for remitting their share of tax |
The bigger lesson is that regulatory delays rarely eliminate compliance costs. They simply move the deadline. Firms that use the extra time strategically will face fewer operational disruptions when the rules finally take effect.

If the CRA Shows Up, Say Less
Fraser Simpson explains in his latest TikTok video why doorstep conversations can become costly.
If a CRA officer appears at your door, do not panic, explain, or guess. Your first words should be: โCan I see your CRA identification and written authorization?โ
@taxmechanic If CRA ever shows up at your door, the next 30 seconds matter more than most Canadians realize. Most taxpayers panic. Most talk too much. ... See more
CRA has audit powers, but your home is different. They cannot enter a private residence without your consent or a warrant. If they ask questions, say: โI want to speak with my tax representative before answering.โ
Situation | Best Response |
|---|---|
CRA at your door | Ask for ID and authorization |
They ask to enter | Do not consent without advice |
They ask questions | Speak to a tax representative first |
