CRA Moves Business Registration Behind CRA Accounts
Mandatory sign-in changes take effect July 14, 2026
Starting July 14, 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency will require businesses to access Business Registration Online (BRO) exclusively through a CRA account, Sign-In Partner, or eligible Provincial Partner. The update means all new Business Number (BN) and CRA program account registrations, including GST/HST and payroll accounts, must be completed after signing in.
The change is designed to strengthen security while streamlining the registration process. Businesses using BRO can receive their BN and program accounts immediately, add them directly to their CRA account, and access related digital services without waiting on the phone.
What Changes | What You Should Do |
|---|---|
BRO requires CRA account access | Confirm you can sign in before July 14 |
Online registration becomes the standard | Verify your identity for full account access |
Some registrations remain ineligible | Use Form RC1 if you cannot register through a CRA account |
Certain situations, including registrations involving non-resident owners or estates, will continue to require alternative registration methods.

How One Investor Built Billions With Just Three Stocks
The power of long-term conviction over constant trading
A recent episode of My First Million explores how investor Nick Sleep generated extraordinary wealth by concentrating his portfolio in just three businesses. Rather than chasing market trends, Sleep focused on companies with durable competitive advantages and a strategy he called shared economies of scale, where businesses reinvest cost savings to strengthen long-term growth.
Key Lesson | Takeaway |
|---|---|
Concentration | Great investments can outperform broad diversification |
Long-term focus | Patience often beats frequent trading |
Business quality | Durable advantages matter more than market noise |

One Mortgage Application Can Produce Very Different Results
Why shopping lenders can make a significant difference
Many borrowers assume every lender will reach the same decision. In reality, mortgage approvals can vary considerably because each bank or lender applies its own underwriting guidelines, risk tolerance, income calculations, and property assessment criteria.
That means the same borrower, with the same income, credit profile, and property, may qualify for very different mortgage amounts depending on where the application is submitted.
Same Borrower | Different Outcome |
|---|---|
Primary bank approval | Just under $520,000 |
Alternative lender approval | Approximately $875,000 |
If your mortgage approval is lower than expected, it does not necessarily mean you cannot qualify for more. It may simply be worth seeking a second opinion or exploring lenders with different qualification criteria.

Business Vehicles Do Not Get Equal Tax Treatment
Fraser Simpson explains why the vehicle category matters
Fraser Simpson in the latest video explains why business owners should compare tax treatment before buying a vehicle through their corporation.
For 2026, CRA caps the depreciable cost of a regular gas-powered passenger vehicle at $39,000 before tax. That means a $100,000 vehicle does not create $100,000 of depreciable cost.
@taxmechanic The biggest mistake isn't choosing the wrong vehicle. It's choosing a vehicle first and learning the tax rules after. Once the purchase is... See more
An eligible electric vehicle has a higher 2026 limit: $61,000 before tax.
